OF THE PLANTS that take up space in the veg patch for most of the year, celeriac is the one - along with January King cabbage - I least begrudge its long tenancy.
Superficially, celeriac is as ugly as a heavyweight with a weak defence yet I find it strangely beautiful too. It grows largely above ground as a gnarly fist topped with a gonk of serrated leaves, giving the grower little confidence through the summer as it tends to swell quite late, especially in a dry summer (ha!) when it should be watered regularly.
