These are mini dough balls similar to the Spanish chorus in the idea but they are deep fried and then coated with sugar syrup. They are known as ‘Awamat’, from the Arabic word meaning ‘AYMA’ or floating, hence they are floating balls in a pond of hot vegetable oil. The latter meaning of ‘Lokmat el Kadi’ (bite of the judge) could have descended from a special story that I couldn’t trace its sarcastic history and meaning to.
